My neighbor is selling a 2000 Toyota Corolla with only 60,000 original miles. It was his late mothers car and she never really used it that much. I'm aware that this is an "OIL BURNING CAR". He wants $2,500 and I can negotiate that price. I was thinking of using it as a "KNOCK AROUND CAR" to go back and forth to work in the big city.
As an OIL BURNING CAR:
1) With only 65,000 is it burning oil already or would it take higher mileage for that to happen?
2) I'm aware that as an oil burner, I would have to put oil every now and then and it can last for a while. My question would be and I know that every car varies, but on a Ball Park Figure...how many miles on the average would I be able to get from this oil burner if I take care of it? 150,00 miles or a little over 200,000 miles before the engine goes?
3) Can an oil burner pass emission inspection if taken care of?
4) What damages in the long run can an oil burner do besides wear the engine out? Damage the Cat, Etc.?
5) I'm thinking an engine rebuild, but I'm pretty sure that it's the piston rings...so if I change them in the future, I guess the same problem will eventually happen? But if I put new pistons/Piston Rings as part of a rebuilt...how long in miles before the first signs of oil burning?
As a general rule the 2000 Corollas do not burn oil how about if it does burn oil they can often go years and years and years if you just keep changing the oil and replacing the spark plugs when they finally clog up
Check spark plugs for oil fouling and for any oily soot in the tailpipe to get an indication of whether it's burning oil. A dry/wet compression test will tell you if rings are worn out.
Is it actually burning any oil? Have you checked?
My 2001 went til 220k miles. Unfortunately being my first car ever I totaled it. The engine was healthy even then. I was even able to putt it off the main road after the front end was smashed in. Before that I just added some oil every month or so, no biggie.
Nice...I guess as a local car to work in the big city during hard conditions wouldn't be a bad idea to put oil every now and then. I work in odd trades and carry tools and park in bad spots like dirt yards and ghetto streets. Good for going to work.
