I recently bought an'01 4Runner with 154,000 miles. I had my mechanic ok the purchase. I am hearing a humming noise when in drive or reverse and stopped.
Drives and shifts fine as far as I can tell.
Any thoughts?

The torque converter?
@yaser
Any suggestions?
Like should I stop driving it?
Are there tests?
"Torque Converter" is not really that helpful...
Is this truck 4WD? I’ve heard the Center Differential makes a humming noise when the vehicle is running. Test drove a 02 w/ 167k 4x4 and it did the same thing. If it’s 4WD I would ask mechanic to check the center diff lock and see if it needs oil replacement.
@tx_4runner
Yes 4wd.
Thanks!
Scotty mentioned in a few different videos that he used this tool that has 4 channels to see if a noise can be isolated to a specific part on the vehicle.
If your mechanic has the resources, see if they can do a similar test while driving it. It’s a great tool and I had a mechanic a few years back who was looking at my old dodge truck that was having a similar issue. One shop said transmission failure, another said front differential failure. It was a front differential failure because the second mechanic was able to isolate the noise and see it was coming from the channel that had a noise isolator on the front diff. See if your mechanic is able to do that. Good luck!
@tx_4runner
Sounds good! Sorry
Thanks!
