Hey Scotty, I have a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am with 82,000 miles on it. My first question is related to coolant. Before winter gets too bad, I want to flush my coolant. It still has the original dexcool coolant in it, and the previous owner didn't drive it much (it was a one owner old lady car before I got it), so I'm not sure if it's been changed. I'm wondering whether I should refill it with dexcool coolant or some other coolant to your recommendation. Second question is related to transmission fluid. Once again, the previous owner didn't drive it much, and I'm not sure if it's ever been changed. I know you shouldn't change the transmission fluid if it never has been changed and it's high mileage, but since it's under 100,000 miles, is it still low enough mileage to safely change? Or is it too old and should I just leave it? Thanks.
Flush and refill the cooling system with the manufacuturer's specified coolant. With a 21 year old car, you are gambling with a trans fluid change, but I would drain it (after warming up), change the filter and refill with the correct, specified fluid and hope for the best. Do not flush the trans.
