2002 dodge intrepid sat for 5 years worth fixing up?

I have an 2002 dodge intrepid that has been sitting outside for the last 5 years. It ran before I parked it. the engine overheated 4 times because the radiator fans stop working until I put a wire over riding it. The A/C also wouldn't blow cold even after putting in refrigerant. Would it be worth trying to fix it up?

So a year later, I have tried to turn on it on but there is just a click. Starter is out. Found a starter on amazon for 69.99. I actually found a lot of parts for the engine for cheap! 500 to do a engine rebuild. 120 for changing the timing chain. 50 for the water pump. The car still worked after those 5 times it over heated for a few months. The only reason why I stop driving it was because the driverside window fell inside the door. I been needing to replace it. I am going to get a new starter for it. If it works and drives for like a month. I will invest a bit to get the insides cleaned up. it only has 116,000 miles on it!

Great news. Cheap transportation.

Probably not unless you are doing it yourself and it isn't needing anything major. You can do whatever you want to it - you don't have anything to loose. Just don't shovel money into it.

If you're talking about sending it to a shop, it sounds like you have an old junker that needs to be sent to the Pick-n-pull yard.

Yeah I want to do it myself. I like the car since its so big and i'm a fat guy that needs room. LIke I said the engine worked and nothing wrong with transmission when I parked it. I can live with the AC not blowing cold since I only drive from home to work lol. I was thinking of just doing the basic things that Scotty shown to get an old sitting car to work again.

No, those cars were endless moneypit pieces of garbage to begin with. You do not want to sink any money into that car.

Yikes.

Man I'd scrap that thing. Time for something new.

I ain't got the money for anything new. I just got a job after 3 years and I had been wanting to fix this car for a while needing to replace the front driver side door.

I'd check to see if it has a blown head gasket or bad compression before I did a lot of work/bought a lot of parts. Overheating can do up a head gasket in short order, and that's not a cheap fix.

Oh thanks for the heads up Glen_stet! Like I said thought I was still driving it around before I had to park it since the driver side door messed up.

Unless you have sentimental attachment or somehow want the satisfaction of resurrecting it, I’d let it go. Even if you get it running, it will need more help next year. If it were me, I’d sell it on Craig’s List ASAP before the used car market crashes. (There are better cars if you just want something roomy)

Yeah I was thinking of just getting it running and cleaning it so I could sell it. I also do want to work on it so that I can learn how to fix other cars as well.

Compression check is key.  If it fails the compression check then you are wasting your time and money going any further.
