Hello, about 2 weeks ago I changed my spark plugs in my 2018 Hyundai Accent with 1.6L gas engine/Automatic transmission 28k miles 1st owner. The car OEM sparkplug is NGK laser iridium, but I bought Iridium X plugs and installed them after verifying it was a suitable replacement.

I checked the plugs a couple days after of 20 miles or below trips per day, and my 1st plug had a brown growth on the plug inside the engine. It was crusty, fell of easily and didn't smell. Did I mess up something or are they faulty plugs?

The car seems to run and drive fine, my MPG is still 32-40 mpg. But i feel like there's less power/acceleration at higher speeds, 45+mph

I mean used sparkplugs still be used. You can't expect them to look as silver as they are when first put in right? Browning is normal from what I understand, but seems like some sort of carbon buildup. You sure they were gapped and toqued down properly?

i used my torque wrench to the service manual spec on them, and i wish it took a photo, it was like mud got into the engine and dried up. brown and flakey.

Where the plugs gapped before installing them? If so then the air/fuel mixture is not proper leaving fuel behind causing buildup. If you are not burning oil that is. That gas smell in the dipstick is something I'd be curious about. Wouldn't trust dealer. Go to another shop to get second opinion.

i'm told Iridium are pre gapped, and if you do you can damage the electrodes. I ordered OE sparkplugs (laser iridium) from the ID code on the original. gunna try to disconnect the battery while installing the plugs to reset the computer and do a long drive.

Best of luck.

does the engine consume oil?

Nope, i have the oil changed every 3k to 4k miles, and check maybe once a month. I do notice a gas smell on the dipstick though. Asked the dealer and they said it's fine.
