2002 Prizm/Corolla transmission growling at low speed

I have a 2002 Chevy Prizm/Toyota Corolla with 46,000 miles. we got it from my wife's mother so I know its an honest 46,000. It has a 3 speed transmission that is starting to make a low growling or rumbling sound when I start to take off. it goes away quickly and it has no problems shifting or shaking or anything else. It happens in forward and reverse. It seems to be worse when the AC is on. We want to keep the car as long as possible for sentimental reasons. Is this something I need to worry about? Would changing the ATF help? Thanks for any help you can give.

Please check our FAQ

Specifically the section about finding noises. I wouldn’t be so quick to blame the transmission

How has the car been driven, is it one of those that was driven to the grocery store and church once a week for a short distance, maybe not much on the highway?

If it were me, I would change it with some new synthetic fluid, like Valvoline max life or Amsoil signature series trans fluid. Dropping the pan and changing the filter would not be a bad idea even at that low mileage. I used Valvoline in a 99 corolla for at least one drain and fill, them followed with an amsoil. Scotty uses Valvoline in one of the last videos in the faq section that @imperator pointed to. Scotty also shows a bottle of Amsoil on one as well, Valvoline right now is considerably cheaper, for about $25 for a gallon.

The faq section is transmissions has some great info to help you make your decision.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try a transmission oil change with full synthetic to start with and also keep listening for other sounds that don't belong. I appreciate your time. Thanks again.

Hey guys, I finally figured out the problem. It needed a new drive belt tensioner. Replaced it this morning and no more noise! Thanks for all ya'lls time.
