Nobody in their right mind would buy a 22-year-old VW with a slipping transmission. It's worth whatever a junkyard will give you for it.

How hard is it to take the transmission out and rebuild it

How hard is it to take the transmission out and rebuild it

Very hard. Automatic transmissions are complex beasts and specialized tools are needed. Even many transmission shops don't get rebuilds right. It's not really a "do at home" project for most of us. (I've only ever replaced transmissions, never tried to rebuild one. Even doing an R&R job with another trans is a big job on most front-drive cars.)

to me ... zero dollars. Actually, you'd have to pay ME to drive a VW

It’s not worth anything.  I would donate it to charity.

You need to be a professional to work on one. Rebuilding transmissions is quite complex, and there are lots of specialized tools. There are bands that may need replacing, for example. Only experience can tell you that. Any average mechanic isn't certified to work on one. You need to either have a special transmission shop rebuild it or take the old one out and put a factory remanufactured one in. I personally prefer the latter. Rebuilders only have a 1-year, or 10k mile warranty in most places. It's not worth thousands of dollars in repairs. They never fully rebuild them, which means they will never last as long as the original one.

If you're handy, go buy a Haynes manual. It's only $20 or so and research it. You'll need a transmission lift in order to do a transmission swap. They made millions of Volkswagen New Beetles, so someone is likely able to remanufacture one. Get one with a 3-year, unlimited mileage warranty. I would still think twice about this, though. Pulling FWD transmissions aren't for the faint of heart.

Bribing a Carmax salesman would cost more than selling it to Carmax for a good deal, haha lol no but try and go online and sell it to Carmax or Carvana or something if you are handy strip it and sell it for parts and probaly get more for the frame.

Those companies are popular dumping grounds for bad cars but would they even want something that old and worn? If he can strip it for parts that's probably the way to make the most money out of it, but that's a lot of work and selling individual parts is a pain.

On Autotrader, there is a 2002 Beetle with 280K miles asking for $2,500. I assume that one works fine though.

I recommend looking around and doing comps. Look for similar year and similar mileage.

Also look for how much it would cost to fix a transmission. subtract this from the comps you get, and you will have an idea of what your car is worth.

it’s not exact, but it will give you a guesstimate.

Just because a seller is asking that much doesn't mean anyone will be willing to buy it at that price.

I concur.

I've also painted it with a roller

I've also painted it with a roller

that must look fantastic 😆

I once bought a 1964 Rambler that had been painted with a brush, using house paint. It helped keep the thing from rusting.
