I have a 2003 Toyota Avalon - 205K miles, having a hard time going into drive, reverse, etc. Codes P0442 (Evap leak), P0500(Speed sensor light), P0741 (torque converter clutch solnd stuck off), P0442 (evap Leak). Is my trans shot or could it be something else? Worried I'm going to get cleaned out at the local shops/transmission places. Any help greatly appreciated!

The best-case scenario is your transmission needs a new torque converter, per the code referenced. It wouldn't be quite as expensive as a remanufactured transmission, but, if you've never changed the transmission fluid, a new torque converter most likely won't do much. The entire transmission is worn out.

It's likely at that age and mileage. When is the last time the transmission was serviced? Is the fluid level OK?

You would need a transmission expert to check it out with a fancy scan tool to be certain about its condition. If it is shot the cost of replacement will likely be more than the car is worth.

It's been a while. My sister got the car probably a 100k ago. She said she hasn't done it Afraid Fluid levels were ok. Guess I better start looking for options...
