2003 Ford Explorer XLT stalling after braking

Dear Scotty,

I have a 2003 Ford Explorer XLT, with the 4.6L V8 SOHC engine with 112000 Km on it (about 70K miles I think). The automatic transmission has been worked on in the past, but I am unsure as to whether it was replaced or just simply worked on. The car drives just fine, and only has one issue, it sometimes will stall randomly after I drive down a steep hill and hit the brakes before a traffic light, but only sometimes. My guess (completely speculation, I am not a mechanic), was that it might have had something to do with the transmission not shifting to neutral at the stop, because I know that if you leave a manual transmission car in gear at the stop, it will stall the engine. The car starts right back up again as well, and has no other issues driving after, and it doesn't happen that often, but it happens enough to make us wonder what's going on, and I thought I'd ask you. There was no trouble codes when we scanned it with our phone app-OBD scanner device. Thanks for all your great videos!

Rev up your engines,

Conventional automatic transmissions do not shift into neutral when you come to a stop. That's why they have torque converters.

You should probably be checking live data as well as looking for codes.

Oh interesting, thanks for teaching me! I'll check live data too. Thanks again.

From the symptoms you describe , it sounds like a vacuum leak when you apply the brakes, which indicates a leak in the brake vacuum diaphragm booster.

Thanks for answering; I am sorry tho, I don't really understand what the brake vacuum diaphragm booster is. Would you mind explaining it more?

Thanks @chucktobias

It's the big round thing between your firewall and the brake master cylinder, under the hood, in front of the driver, that your brake pedal is attached to.
