Occasionally (like 1 out of 10 starts) I'll smell fuel for a couple seconds when i first start the car.
The MPG are about 16.5 city and 20 highway. Google says it should be 23/28. I'm a very MPG conscious driver, so its not me. My car knowledge is very rudimentary
the car has 145k miles and runs pretty good otherwise. Accelerating seems a little weak though
Things I've tried so far:
-Had a mechanic visually inspect it for misfires (5 minute check), said it sounded and looked great.
-Got new wheels (not so much for the MPG issue)
-Changing the 3rd clutch transmission fluid pressure sensor because it had a stored code P0845
-Changed the Transmission fluid at the same time (only a single flush (plan on a 2nd later)) (didnt change the filter, but will on the 2nd flush).
-Checked air filter. seemed okay, so i put it back
-Changed cabin air filters - very dirty.
-used fuel dye to check the lines for a leak. I got lazy and only ended up checking the exterior without taking anything apart.
-used fuel injector cleaner.
I bought the car used and found receipts in the glove box later, showing the previous owner was aware of the issue (undisclosed) and took it to a mechanic. The mechanic changed oil, pressurized tires and changed spark plugs. (oil level is still good for a few thousand miles)
Thanks for any help
Here I inspect the fuel injectors which I think might need a new O ring. Any thoughts?
Accelerating seems a little weak though
Has the engine air filter & fuel filter ever been changed? Also, pressure test the fuel pump.
From what I can tell It seems like the previous owner mostly just kept up on oil changes, as the transmission fluid was very black and the bolt quite gunked up when replaced. Because of that, I dont think the fuel filters ever been replaced. I was just looking into that today, and it seems to be installed in the fuel pump?
I checked the air filter, but it seemed pretty clean, so I put it back.
Ill look into fuel pump pressure test! Thanks
Unless you were sure it was recently replaced, I’d instal a brand new good quality/OEM air filter just to rule out the simple things. You can always reuse it later. For the fuel filter location, see here -
From what I can tell, that's for Australian model. Unless I'm just missing it, mine looks different
I also can't do a fuel pressure check very easily. There's no screw on point. I'd need some hose jury rig
Hmm, interesting. I guess you’ll have to call up the dealer with your VIN to know for sure if it’s just part of the pump assembly or if it’s lurking somewhere else, on the vehicle. If there’s no Schrader valve, you may have to have a mechanic test it for you.
Ill give them a call tomorrow. Changed my engine air filter today. I also cleaned the throttle and MAP sensor. Will test this weekend and letcha know any improvement. Did you get a chance to watch the fuel injector video I posted as a comment?
I thinks that’s expected with age & wear. What are your fuel trims? Have you checked? You could chose to replace the injector o-rings with new ones - https://www.hondapartsnow.com/oem-honda-fuel_injector_o_ring.html?vin=&make=Honda&model=CR-V&year=2003&submodel=&extra1=5%20Door%20LX%20(2WD)&extra2=KA%204AT&filter=() Do keep the forum updated.
havent checked trims. would an auto parts store be able to check it for me?
If they had a scan tool which could read live data, sure. Even some cheap scan tools (like BlueDriver) can read that information.
After cleaning Throttle, MAP sensor and changing Engine Air filter, highway MPG is between 25-27! Thanks for the help everybody!
No worries, glad we could help. I take it you watched Scotty’s video featuring your question, yesterday?
oh I hadn't seen it yet! I just hunted it down though. I had cleaned the MAP because of the video he referenced about how to clean the MAF, so a win for Scotty either way! I wish i knew whether it was the filter or the MAF cleaning, but im just happy its fixed! saved me 100 bucks in gas on my road trip!
Try putting the old air filter back in. If your gas mileage goes back down, you’ll know the culprit instantly.
I would be happy with that. You will never achieve the Google number.
Changed cabin air filters - very dirty.
That doesn't affect the mpg.
used fuel injector cleaner.
Have you noticed any difference afterwards?
If I were you, I would replace the injectors with OEM ones.
no difference with the cleaner. I think I'll replace the O ring on injector 4, and the entire 2nd injector with the crack at least. I am able to change just 1 injector right? or do I need to do all 4?
You don't need to replace all of them, but if I were you, I would change them all.
Here I inspect the fuel injectors which I think might need a new O ring. Any thoughts?
You've already got them out, so you might as well. They shouldn't cost much
