2003 toyota corolla timing

This is my first time doing timing and I wasnt sure as the exact steps to take when taken it off, like making sure #1 piston was supposed to be at TDC when taken it off. I was under the impression that you were just supposed to make sure that the 3 yellow links were lined up with the timing marks when you put it back on. Well I ended up doing that and quickly realizing that isnt the case after putting everything back together. So I ended up taken it all back apart and need to know how to correct the timing and to see which cylinder is the number 1 cylinder and how to make sure its at TDC, so I can finally get my car started again. Any help would be truly appreciated.. Thanks in advance!

I can't give you a detailed answer, but I'd suggest looking at joining/searching Toyotanation.com - the folks on that make/model specific site could probably give you the details you need. Here's an example I saw in a quick search.
