Is golf mk4 a good first car? I'm asking about price, maintenance cost, reliability and all that.

It depends where are you living.
If in Europe, yes. There are plently of parts available and cheap, mechanics know how to work on it and you can get it at a good price.
If in US and you want a first good car, Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic is probably a better choice.
