My daughter bought a 2004 Subaru Legacy with 125,000 miles off somebody out of state. After driving it a month, the head gasket blew. Would it be worth replacing it? People I've talked to said the engine has to be pulled to do it and can cost almost what she paid for the car.

Yes that is true, common issues on those older Subaru's.

I'd shop around a bit if you're not up to doing the job yourself, find a mechanic familiar with doing the job. Subaru engines are relatively easy to pull out so it's not quite as disastrous as it sounds. If you have a friend or relative who is mechanically inclined you might even be able to get the job done with some weekend wrenching and a six-pack or two.
