2004 Toyota Corolla bad catalytic converter dilema

Hi

i have a 2004 Toyota Corolla LE  manual shift with 98525 miles on it. The check engine light came on and I was told it was the catalytic converter. I will also need new tires this year and brakes. Nothing has been replaced on this car. I love it, but I am considering buying a new car. What would you do?

Could be the catalytic converter itself or the downstream oxygen sensor...most likely the oxygen sensor unless your engine burns a ton of oil. It's a low-mileage Corolla, I would keep it if it's still running good.

Take care of it. The car has many miles left in it.

Am I reading this right? You’re weighing up 4 new tyres, a full brake job & a new cat against buying another car?

99,000 miles is nothing for a manual Corolla. It can go past 500,000 miles with just regular maintenance.

You know the history of this thing, why roll the dice on another used car?

It’s another story if you want a bigger/different body style or want a brand new vehicle.

Tires and brakes are part of regular maintenance so don't let that dissuade you.

However, depending on what state you live in, a new cat can be $$$ or $.  So that should be the deciding factor, IMHO.
