[Solved] How do I fix random misfire

Good Evening Scotty!

 

Submitting a question to you for my Dad.

 

He has a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 5.7 Hemi that is misfiring (most noticeable at idle). 

  • Initially the code was PO300 and PO304 so we move the coil from cylinder #4 to cylinder #1 and cleared the codes.
  • The misfire did not follow the coil like we hoped for, but we didn't get engine code (PO300 or PO304) for misfire at all (even though it was quite obvious its not running right, still sounding like its misfiring). The only engine code we have now is for a bad 02 sensor (2/2)
  • We replaced all the spark plugs, coils, and spark plug wires (never been changed 188K on truck). The engine still is misfiring/ running rough.
  • Our Chrysler dealer suggested we drive it some to see if we can get it to trip a misfire engine code. We did, but no misfire code. (Engine light is on, but for O2 sensor). 

 

Not sure where we should go from here. The plugs, coils, and wires were past due so we felt okay about changing them, but we also don't want to keep throwing good money after bad if something major is wrong (cam worn out).

Very good video. I wonder if oil jets would help reduce cam wear. Obviously if the cam is worn out on my Dad's truck they'll do no good, but maybe for future builds 

 

I just watch another Scotty video on 5.7 Hemi- could it also be a bad EGR valve? 

 


Update: We brought the truck to the dealership and they figured out the problem was a broken valve spring. Replaced and now runs good 🙂


Thanks for letting us know, very lucky it wasn't the camshaft failure typical of these engines!
