Hello! I have a 2005 Mercury Sable LS Premium with 133k miles that smells of gas when I fill the tank past half. When I brake hard the smell coming through the vents becomes even worse. Sometimes a code trips for large evaporative leak. What could it be?

Have it scanned for codes which will probably show a malfunctioning EVAP system needing new parts and repair.

The car is 17 years old, it could be pretty much anything or everything in the evap system. Pay particular attention to all those old hoses.
