2006 COROLLA P017 CODE UNSOLVABLE

Hey Scotty!  Thanks for ALL your wisdom and that of your members/community.

We have a 2006 Corolla SE, 4 CYL automatic with 163,000 miles.  Second owner.

The check engine light recently lit with a P017 code.

Mechanics so far have:

1) replaced the mass airflow sensor,

2) replaced the PCV valve.

3) cleaned the injectors.

In spite of these remedies, the check engine light keeps coming back on.  Uuuugh.

Pulling our hair out.  Any suggestions?

Thanks  Scotty and community!

That is often caused by a timing belt or timing chain being worn and then the cam and crank aren't synced anymore and the computer trips that code

Thanks Scotty!

P0017 - Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1 Sensor B)

none of the things you changed are related to code P0017. Did you try looking it up?

check here for possible solutions

Thanks @mountainmanjoe. My bad...typo. Code was a P0171 (not P017) but mechanics said the oxygen sensor was OK and tried the other remedies I mentioned without success.

P0171 System Too Lean Bank 1

https://www.obd-codes.com/p0171

"Lean" means too much air and not enough fuel.

Read the "possible solutions" they are relevant. Especially intake gasket leak

A quick trick I use is to spray starter fluid (or wd40 or whatever) around the intake and if the engine speeds up then you've got an air leak in that spot.

There are of course more professional ways

Of course, poor fuel pressure is a possibility too.

OK, thanks for the wisdom and Scotty's reference videos @mountainmanjoe. Appreciate all you guys do.

I hope your Corolla is purring along soon
