2006 Ford Escape Hybrid Battery check

Hi Scotty,
I have enjoyed your video's now for years. Question: I have a 2006 Ford Escape hybrid. Auto transmission, 170,000 miles.  I've owned this car for 14 years and it has been overall a great car. The problem has been with the hybrid battery, it first went bad after being ten years old, yes right out of warranty. Ford wanted $12,000 for a battery, which is what we paid for the car, so we opted for a rebuilt battery for $2600 which lasted about four years. We are now on the second rebuilt battery which is now about six months old and still under the one year warranty. The car is experiencing the same symptoms that happened both times before the battery completely gave up, at which time the vehicle is dead on the road. I contacted the rebuilder and he came over with a module plugged into the obd port and connected with this cell phone and he said the battery was fine. I asked him if it was checking the high voltage battery output with and without load and he said no, his readout only gets error codes and it showed none.  If I don't drive the car for a day or two, it balks when first driving and the indicator on the radio readout shows zero bars of energy, driving it for a couple hours brings the battery back up for now, but when the last battery was on it's last breath it would just plain die on the road, sometimes it would restart, other times not.  I really don't want to have to wait for that again. What can I do to show this battery is failing before the one year warranty is up? Thank you Scotty!

Sounds about right. Some go bad sooner, some will last longer.

The problem with "rebuilt" batteries is only the bad cells are replaced, so you wind up with several new cells and a bunch of old ones. You're lucky to have gotten four years out of it.

Not unexpected.

A more comprehensive battery check needs to be performed by a hybrid expert.

However keeping a 19-year-old Ford hybrid going is probably beating a dead horse. You were fortunate to get 14 years of use out of the thing, time for something else. Those are not particularly known for long-term reliability.
