2006 Saab 9-5 drain

Hi Scott,

Car will not start at random most unexpected times.  Been a couple years with this issues.  Mechanic tested and replaced battery.  And it’s still happening.  Finally another mechanic said there was a drain but he doesn’t know from where.    I have noticed that the ignition key even after shutting car off and removing key, when door opens you the chimes sounds which indicates car is still on the on switch.   Can operate radio without inserting key.  To shut off, have to replace key in and take out again with a wiggle sometimes to shut off.  Now no chimes ringing when opening door and radio now off.  Could this be what are our problem is and was.  Expense to replace ignition?  Also I am aware that keys will need replacing as well.  Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions.

Yes I would replace the electrical portion of the ignition switch it's probably sticking on. Good luck with getting parts for that old Saab though here in the United States they're almost impossible to get parts for since the company went bankrupt decades ago

The parts situation for Saabs is not quite that dire because the parts operation was separate and was not included in the bankruptcy.  Of course with no car production for over a decade now some parts are becoming difficult to find but most wear items are readily available. The ignition switch is in stock for immediate delivery from various sources but is expensive:

Another possibility would be a good used one from Goldwing used Saab parts.

You should not have to mess around with keys if just the electrical part of the ignition switch is being replaced.

You might also want to ask in a Saab specialty forum about the problem:
