P0500 transmission speed sensor. My speedometer quit working and also cruise control. check engine light came on and its a speed sensor. I was told there was a TSB update  for the computer for this. Went to the dealer for that $168.00. check engine light came back on and speedometer goes off and on. You can always tell its going to quit working because while driving it will hesitates when shifting and then goes out. I got an OE speed sensor and it was replaced. then the car would not shift out of first gear so the part taken out and returned and the original put back in. back to the same thing as before. Bought another OE sensor for completely different company and did same thing. So my question is there appears to be 2 of them 1` located under the batter tray and the other under air filter. The parts store hasn't been any help. I have watched so many videos and there is an NT speed sensor and a NC speed sensor. Which one goes where and there appears to be different prices on the two. Please help the dealer wanted $719.00 to replace the sensors and I can't afford that. they gave ne the part numbers for them. But Im still having a hard time finding the correct ones. I have been dealing with this for 5 months. the part numbers are as follows,

89413-48010 and 89413-08020.

According to my data system there are two senses but it doesn't show exactly where they're all located but they are both on the transmission so go to AutoZone they can print you up a picture they have a data system where they give free information to customers and print it up free

This may be an oversimplification, but maybe you could have the original sensors tested and cleaned. That's the first thing. I found this page generally helpful: https://www.engine-codes.com/p0500_toyota.html

The page also mentions that the old error code has to be erased. (That's no big deal, even with a cheap scan tool). I have to ask if the technician who worked on this previously erased the DTC [Diagnostic Trouble Code] after replacing the parts).

The parts are easy enough to find. OEM, from a dealer:

I'd suggest OEM dealer parts (although you could go the salvage yard route, and p/u used OEM's cheaper).

Parenthetically, there's plenty of counterfeit Toyota/Denso parts circulating, so be aware of that.

So, the OEM parts are $200. $719 for a few minutes of work is a ripoff.

Replacing the NC Sensor is relatively easy, with common tools. See this 1aAuto video:

Good luck.
