this pickup has a 4 speed automatic transmission and if i drive it more than 20 miles the transmission temp red lines and it takes it a long time to cool off. I let it set for 6 months without driving it and then it started over heating the tranny.

Well you may as well try this change the filter and fluid. Cuz if the filter is clogged in the fluid is dirty, it won't flow correctly and it will overheat
