Acura TL transmission Noise

Hey Scotty,

I'm the original owner of a 2000 Acura 3.2TL, after 296,000KM I finally had the original transmission rebuilt (WOW I know). The transmissions shifts great now, no more slipping or delayed shifting however there is an annoying whistle / whining noise when I accelerate, sounds like an airplane taking off. It goes away after reaching cruising speed. The tech said this is normal for Honda rebuilt transmissions, I feel they just don't want to take it apart again, they are so busy, should I demand they fix it or just turn up the radio and live with it. They gave me a 1yr 20,000km warranty.

I also need to get my transmission rebuilt or replaced on my 2001 TL and it whines just like yours, especially since it started slipping two years ago.  It really doesn't bother me but I've read that this is the sound of a "starving pump" in the transmission.  I would get a second opinion from a professional transmission mechanic just to be sure.  Out of curiosity, I'd like to know how much you paid for the transmission rebuild and where you went to get it done (back-yard mechanic, transmission specialist, dealership ...)

Please advise.


I'm located in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) in Ontario Canada. I paid $1800 CDN, they are transmission specialist, its all they do, some of the bigger chains were asking 3000-3900 for a rebuild, but their rebuilds replace almost all parts whether they need it or not, this rebuild only replaces worn or damaged parts and all seals. $1800-$2000 seems to be the average for mom-pop transmission shops.  I've heard of oil pump going bad and making that noise but I figure it would make that noise at all times not just when accelerating as the oil pump is always working. Plus the noise goes away once I'm cruising at constant speed.

you definitely want to replace ALL wear parts inside a transmission when opening it up.

You don't want to have a breakdown 200 miles down the road because cheaped out on a $10 part, and have to take it all out again.


I would hope so, unfortunately the transmission is one of those things I cannot verify they did their due diligence and replaced all those gaskets and seals etc.


which is why you should buy an off-the-shelf re-manufactured transmission that's been dyno tested and comes with a guarantee, from a commercial supplier.
