Those have quite a few problems: https://prosourcediesel.com/blog/ford-powerstroke/6-4-powerstroke-years-to-avoid/?srsltid=AfmBOooJUB1f-o_MfBtCkXm852cWhc2vTR5P2h1m9o6nrMWwTMGC9LDF .

Engine problems, oil dilution problems.... Now you're looking at a nearly two decade-old vehicle. How well it was taken care of will be far more important than how well it was running brand new. You must have a mechanic like scotty. Check it out. Before you buy it cuz otherwise you could be stuck with an unreliable rolling pile of junk.

A lot. That engine had A LOT of problems.

They include:

  • cracked pistons
  • stretched head bolts and blown head gaskets
  • premature rocker arm wear from poor lubrication
  • Oil cooler clogging
  • Oil dilution (It's not rare for owners to report draining an extra gallon!!)
  • EGR cooler rupture
  • Exceptionally poor fuel economy
  • failing injectors

Run away. You are better off with the Cummins ISB in the Dodge Ram over the MaxxForce 7 in the Ford F-250.

My local school district, which is the sixth largest in the U.S., had 97 MY2009 MaxxForce-powered buses in their fleet and all of them started having problems at the 70,000-mile mark, including fuel filters being clogged up every other day. Mind you, they were the Inline-6 MaxxForce DT, but the V8 MaxxForce 7 has some of the same issues.

On the other hand, my local school district has 50 MY2014 Cummins-powered buses and they had no engine problems at 70,000 miles.

Regardless, make sure the mileage hasn't been cheated on as it is a 17-year-old vehicle.
