Hello,
My Focus makes a mild clunking noise when I let the revs drop to around 1,200 rpm and then accelerate.
I know that I should downshift before accelerating instead of lugging that tiny naturally aspirated gasoline engine at such low rpms. Usually I choose not to downshift when I'm in slowly moving urban traffic, and 2nd gear is fine most of the time but then suddenly the car in front of me slows down and then speeds up a little once again. In these cases, shifting into 1st gear would take longer and would be more inconvenient than just carefully accelerating. However, sometimes the above mentioned clunking noise is induced by this act. Where may it come from?
To me, it sounds like it comes from part of the drivetrain. The clutch only has about 15k miles on it. My guess would be the flywheel but have never really heard of a simple flywheel going bad on a naturally aspirated gasonline powered vehicle.
What are your thoughts?
Thanks in advance!
Best regards,
Dan

Down shift as necessary.
