Hey Scotty:

I got a 2009 F150 Platinum (5.4L v8 triton) with 212000km on it. I am the second owner after my father who babied it. We both have religeiously done oil changes every 3 months or 5000km.

Anyway, when the truck is hot after a run, it seems to go out of timing when at a stop light or using reverse. The engine gets noisy and shakes, and i usually have to dump it into reverse and rev up the engine to deliver higher oil pressure to the head and to the cam phasers to bring it back into correct timing. It only happens when hot and only at low RPM and while under load. ie: holding brake stopped at light in gear, reversing at low speeds.

Local garage wont touch it. They dont want the work i guess. So i took it to a ford dealer and got it quoted for repairs. They want 4500.00 CDN to do the job of replacing the timing chains, cam phasers, chain guides and slack adjusters, vct solenoids and other stuff i'm likely forgetting.

The truck is overall in great shape for the age, it starts everytime and all the equipment works. It doesnt burn oil, doesnt leak any fluids and is overall a reliable truck aside from

Would you fix it to get another 100 to 200k km out of it? Or would you buy a used truck for twice the cost of the repair? Should i use that ATS Chemical 505 on it to clean it up afterwards?

and unfortunately that might not even fix it, and you'll end up back to square one soon after.

I think they won't touch it because they know it'll come back.

No way. Sell it or run it into the ground. Sounds like you got your money's worth out of it.

Then, stay away from Ford.

Has anybody run a scan for codes yet?

Its only throwing a code for O2 sensors. And even that only triggers the check engine light maybe once every two months for a day and then it goes away on its own. From what i understand, there is no real sensors that detect issues with the cam phasers. But i may be wrong.
