Hi all! 2009 Toyota Highlander with 165K, works really well so far. My main issue is that over the past several months I have noticed it takes longer for the engine to start. It cranks and tries, and always does start, but it takes on average 4-5 seconds to fire up. My wife was starting it this past weekend and she didn't keep the key engaged long enough and after 3 tries she ran back into the house complaining 'it won't start'. I then had to tell her to just hold the key down until it does. Then I realized this isn't right. So, any ideas? Battery and alternator are brand new, replaced earlier this year. Maybe a starter issue?
I'm hesitant to take it in to a shop because it does work and start, not sure if any codes would pop up?
Thank you!
How old are your air filter, fuel filter, and spark plugs? Also, check that the fuel rail is holding residual pressure when the engine is turned off.
air filter and spark plugs are changed, but i've never checked the fuel filter or fuel rail. Since my car is about 15 years old would it be a bad idea to replace the starter or just wait until it fails?
Unless the starter is not working properly there's no reason to replace it. Fuel filter should be changed and pressure checked.
Thank you, I will get on it.
