smoke and smell at idle

2010 Camry le 2.5L 230k

This car wouldn’t go over 40, I used your advice and put laquuer thinner in the tank, but the car smoked and ram rich afterwards.

i changed the cat and it fixed the loss of power, but it still smokes bad carbon smell at idle and at acceleration.

fuel trim is -18 and up at wot. I checked the fuel injectors for malfunction issues, leaks and found nothing.

what’s your opinion on a solution?

Well, at minus 18 it's running super rich. You probably have a leaking fuel injector or a bad mass airflow sensor. But if not that it could easily be. The head gasket is starting to blow

Changed mass air flow and brought the numbers down around -11 total trim. But it has the same symptoms. Smoke out the pipe, idles during cold start then shuts off when it heats up.

Af sensor is reporting lean and the trims has that rich command.

It shows open loop default

The upstream responds to rich conditions during snap throttle

Downstream stays around -+ .04 ma

The dealership after the 2nd diagnostic tells me to replace the engine. $14k cost

I Replaced the fuel pump

What else could it be. Again it ran fine before the laquer thinner. If I would of replaced the cat only I believe I wouldn’t be in this situation.

What am I missing?

There's controversy about putting lacquer thinner in your gas tank. But from what I saw it looks like you need to put on around 150 miles to for it to clean out the cat & run through the system. Assuming you did that already, my next thing is maybe its your O2 sensor. They are very precise sensors, and id bet something in the lacquer thinner when it got burn could have thrown it off. Id say this is more likely if its the original sensor, almost 14 years old with 230k miles. The sensor may just be reporting incorrect information to the ECU, making the car run rich when it shouldn't.

I'm assuming your air filter or spark plugs are okay.

PS: Lacquer thinner can cause damage to plastic components in your fuel system. Its good the fuel pump has been replaced, but keep an eye out for fuel leaks throughout the rest of the system moving forward.

What is the fuel trim at idle?

The memory is stuck with stft-0 ltft- -7.. but the car has the open loop default, so from what I see on the scan tool it’s staying at that fixed number whether at idle, snap throttle and wot during test drive

Couple of questions.. First off, does your car have 230,000 kilometers or 230,000 miles?

Also, what exactly do you mean by "has the open loop default"?

Are you saying the short & long term fuel trims are not affected by RPMs?

It has 233,694 miles

Yea the trim are not effected by rpm bc of the open loop default.

I did a snap throttle test and now it has a crank no start, it has p0015 poo16 codes,

At this point I’m thinking timing issue. How can I prove that before tearing this engine apart?

Given the car's mileage, you could easily need a new timing chain/tensioner. However, you mentioned, "it was running fine" before putting lacquer thinner in it"?

Additionally, IMO somethings not right if your scan tool is reporting the same values regardless of the RPM? I normally check values in closed loop with RPMs measured at idle, 1500, 2500 and 3500.

Will some else chime in here!

The exhaust cam phaser is cracked. It look like it jumped timing. So I’m thinking timing kit and phaser should fix the issue

'Unlucky coincidence' vvt phaser breaking after using the paint thinner? If it's nice car otherwise @ 234k miles..

If negligible oil consumption & good compression? Then can't hurt throwing in a timing kit..

It’s a solid car, plugs, oil, pcv valve and hose was replaced

Prior to the issues there was a code for vvt. It was making that rattling noise at startup and while driving. So it’s been long over do for the fix

Good to hear. Properly serviced, the 2.5L engine can last a long time. Transmissions.. well they're not so wonderful though. Those 6 speeds always "hunting" for a gas saving gear.

NOW you remember, j/k!  Once you've sorted the valve/timing issues, might solve your "too rich" condition also.
