Scotty, I have a Tundra with the 5.7 it has 86,000 miles on it. I have changed the oil every 5000 miles. I have heard that there is an issue with valve springs breaking and if you are unlucky dropping the valve destroying the engine. I asked my local dealer they said they have only had 2-3 with broken springs but none destroying the engine. I had the parts person lookup the cost of a new engine he said they couldn’t get them and we’re using used engines when they need one. I found that in mid year in 2016 there was a parts number change for the springs it said if newer order the new number and if older order the old number. I don’t want to have an issue that would cost more that the value of the vehicle to fix. What do you think?
Welcome to the forum.
Dont sweat it. The Toyota 5.7 is about as bombproof an engine as there is in the past 10 years.
Think of it this way: any time you do a job as complex as replacing the valve springs you can make a mistake. I would guess that the odds of the mechanic making a mistake are greater than the odds of spring failure if you leave it alone.
So just keep maintaining it as you are and let it be.
Cheers!
Well I haven't personally seen that valvespring problem myself. So it's not as common as some people might think. But really if your engine's running fine, just keep changing the oil and see what happens. Because used engines just are a freaking gamble. Anyway you look at it?
