I have a 2011 Lexus IS350 AWD that has about 64K miles on it. I hear a popping sound when turning left and it’s more apparent when I’m doing a sharp left turn. Also, I hear the popping sound when turning in a circle. At times, I also hear it when accelerating. Upon searching for this on Google, a bad CV axle is what comes up as the cause, but I’m not sure if this is a normal sound since it it’s an all wheel drive car. I also heard it slightly when turning right. My question is, is it the CV axle that’s causing this noise and needs to be replaced?
Below are links on the noise I’m hearing in my car:
Thank you.
All wheel drive cars and front wheel drive cars have CV axles in the front, which basically have the same functions - and when they are damaged or worn out, they make a popping noise when turning. Most often, the rubber boot over the CV joint gets torn, which lets the grease leak out and the now un-greased joint to wear out and make noise. Inspect the boots.
If the boots are fine, you will need to get the car up on a lift and get a look at the rest of the front end driveline and suspension for damaged/worn items. Scotty demos this in a number of videos.
