Love your channel Scotty! I watch it every day!!
I'm trying to help my sister. I do all my own car work, but on this one I am not sure how to proceed.
She has a 2011 Mazda 3 GT with automatic transmission at 144,000KMS which is having some transmission issues:
- when in D mode, when the transmission shifts from 3rd to 4th the engine surges and then the transmission engages quite hard
- when in M mode, when shifting from 3rd to 4th the same thing happens but slightly less violent
- when the vehicle is cold the problem is worse
- when under acceleration the problem is much worse
- transmission fluid was changed at the dealer around 130,000KMS
I don't have a code reader but I have read on forums that the TCM could cause this kind of thing.
But what say you, given your massive experience.
Perplexed in Vancouver, BC.
Kevin
Well yes a bad TCM could do that. Find a guy like me to road test it with a fancy scan tool. Pray it's the TCM but from my experience, it's normally the transmission just breaking down internally on those Mazdas. Good luck!
Ok thank you for responding Scotty! Much appreciated.
I was under the impression that these Mazdas had both excellent engines and excellent transmissions. It sounds like you have had different experiences.
Thanks again,
Kevin

Prior to 2015 Mazda was partly owned by Ford and used a fair amount of Ford technology and parts, with the expected results.
Understood 👍
