2 cars: 2016 and 2014 Toyota Corolla LE w/variable auto trans. 50k and 70K miles.
This happened on both cars, one right after the other.
Key with built-on fob died. Changed fob batteries (and cleaned). Cars did not respond to fobs anymore. Used 2nd fob that came with each car with good results.
I am afraid to try to put fresh batteries in the working fobs because I expect to end up with 4 fobs that no longer work.
Is there a way to change the key fob batteries without needing a dealer or locksmith?
Thank you for listening and any answers!
I’ve had this happen when -
1. Reversed polarity of the new battery, and/or
2. Using cheap Chinese knockoff batteries.
Try using genuine Renata/Panasonic batteries and check if it works.
PS. Did you use a wet/damp cloth to clean the inside of the fob?
InThrustWeTrust,
Thanks but this was not of any help.

You’ll then need a locksmith/dealer to reprogram the computer (if the batteries messed up the fob transponder). All the best.
here are links to owners manuals that tell you how to replace batteries in FOBS from what I read shouldn't be any problem but refer for yourself
