2014 Santa Fe Sport 2.4L Burning Oil

I have a 2014 Santa Fe Sport with a 2.4L 4cyl GDI engine. The car only has 66000 miles. I noticed recently that my engine has started to have a lot of oil consumption (about 1/2 a quart per 500 miles).

I did my last oil change at 65348 miles and used 5W-20 conventional oil. I always check my oil every once in a while and I noticed that the dipstick read in the middle mark at only 65968 miles (or just 620 miles after the last oil change). I had to add 1/2 of a quart for the dipstick to read full again. I checked for leaks and couldn't find any. I don't know why my engine is burning so much oil with such low mileage. I have never noticed oil consumption before. To make matters worse, at just 66000 miles, I had to add 1/4 of a quart oil for the dipstick to read full.

So far I have only gone 652 miles since my last oil change and I have already had to add 3/4 of a quart of oil, with the oil consumption getting increasingly worse. At this rate, I will have to add about 4.5 quarts or more before my next oil change. 

My manual says that 5W-20 is recommended, but 5W-30 may be used. I have always used conventional 5W-20 oil and have done oil changes every 5000 miles. I plan on doing my next oil change at around 70000 miles and I plan on using 5W-30 full synthetic. I hope that may reduce oil consumption even a little.

My car is still under the Hyundai powertrain warranty until 2024 or until I hit 100000 miles (whichever comes first).

Why is my engine burning so much oil? What can/should I do? I'm, worried it will keep getting worse.

Hyundais are known for that, unfortunately. Pray it's your PCV valve otherwise your engine is already wearing out.

Always install a new PCV valve when changing oil and filter.  If the valve doesn't help, your rings are wearing out and you need a rebuild.

Definitely check the PCV valve and pray it solves it. Those 2.4 engines were poorly made engines.

Just realized I never updated anyone on what happened. The PCV valve didn't fix anything. The oil consumption only worsened over the next month. It got to be as bad as 1qt every 250 miles before Hyundai finally installed a new small-block assembly under warranty. It was a very long and difficult process to get Hyundai to warranty the engine. As expected, they did everything they could to try to not have to warranty it. The best part was, my dad's engine seized the day after we got my vehicle back from the dealership. His is a 2018 Santa Fe Sport with the 2.0T. His engine gave no prior warnings before seizing. He got a new engine under warranty as well, although Hyundai was of course skeptical as my engine was just replaced. He needed to provide service records of everything since he bought it. The dealership also had to mail in his intake manifold to Hyundai corporate for some reason. Now, we both have new small block assemblies and neither of us has had any issues since. Since then I've been meticulous with all maintenance. We can only hope that the new engines won't have the same or similar defects in the future.
