Scotty,

My 2015 RAM 5.7l has develop the “hemi tick” with 68500 miles. The dealer wants $1200 to dismantle the engine to determine the severity of the issue and suggests the repair might be from $5000 to repair to $10000 for a new engine.  I just paid off this truck.

should I repair or replace?  I might get 16500 to 18000 by selling or trading in.  I’m stuck on what might be the wiser choice.  Can you advise on my best course of action?

thanks,

The engines are poorly made and they text because the cam doesn't get enough lubrication then the engine wears out inside and it does cost a fortune to rebuild them. May I get rid of the damn thing if it runs good enough? Never buy another one really considering how poorly made they are

Replace the failing hydraulic roller lifters and cam with high quality, aftermarket replacements.  That shouldn't cost $5K.

Before doing this, wouldnt you want to make sure that the cam is okay? Bad lifters can dig into the cam right?

@nta98 - Yes, they can and do dig into the cam.  You can check this by removing the valve covers, have someone turn the engine over and watch to see if the rockers all move the same.  If not, new lifters and possibly a cam are needed.  If they all move the same, the problem is elsewhere.

Thanks, thought that was worth mentioning to but wasnt 100% sure.

Can I keep driving it?  One user suggested changing the oil to synthetic and see f it stops?  It has no other issues other than the shift knob seems to be less smooth to twist.
