Good morning car guru's. After much education from "Scotty" videos I will be changing both the front, and brake pads on my 2016 4Runner SR5 4wd. It looks simple, and fairly straight forward. Looks like I'll be saving some money. The only part of the process that is grey for me is to bleed, or not to bleed my breaks. I've heard with ABS you MUST bleed your brakes as you compress the cylinder, but then I've also read that if you compress slowly there is no need. Finally, if I do need to bleed is there a best practice for that? As always I thank everyone for their help and time.
Respectfully,
John
Sorry for the typo on the title of this question.... Brake vice break...
Fixed!
Perfect... Thank you very much. I appreciate your help.
No worries, that’s what this forum was intended for.
I never bled the brakes after replacing the pads. Just pushed back the pistons slowly and careful not to rupture the piston seals.
where does the fluid go when you compress the piston?
Back into the master reservoir, which, of course, you keep and eye on so it won't overflow. I guess I'm assuming (dangerous) that the guy knows something about mechanics.
that's what I assumed too. And when you stand really hard on the brakes, the pressure must be tremendous and the seals must be able to withstand it (pedal has much more travel than the cylinder)
Exactly right, Joe.
