Tried using a TOPDON ArtiDiag800BT to add a key to a 2016 Honda Civic EX, but during the process it was taking too long than it's supposed to & somehow when going through the steps of turning the car back on, now it won't. It just flashes the Honda logo briefly, then if you try to start it normally by pressing the brake along with the start button, the screen says to place the fob near the start button for about 30 secs then turns off again. The fob still locks & unlocks the car & the proximity sensor beeps when you step away. Even after strictly following the screen instructions of just placing the key near the start button to start, it doesn't. Some YouTube videos show to press the brake while tapping the start button with the fob, that didn't work either. I can't even hookup a 5160 OBD scanner to it to communicate. Checked all the fuses under the hood, none of them were blown. The car battery's 12.6V & the fob is 3V so power isn't the issue.
I bought the scanner thinking that it might be able to do special functions for me in the future like ABS bleeding & immobilizer & you can get to those functions. I wouldn't have even tried to attempt it if I was locked out from using it. The software is up to date. From the looks of it, it's basically a rebadged Thinkscan Max so I didn't doubt it's capabilities. Only offered to help a cousin for free who's a military vet because he only has 1 set of keys & he's had close calls of losing it a couple of times.
I have read on some forum that they waited anywhere from 1-2 days before they were able to start it again, but those were cases involving window tinting & rain (which it also did recently here). Did it just lock me out temporarily and there's a set time period where it'll run normally again? Will unhooking the battery, reset it to function again? Will a locksmith be able to reset it if he has the right equipment or am I royally screwed & have to tow it to the dealer & be under their mercy?
Appreciate the help.
After waiting 1 & 2 days of trying to start unsuccessfully, I just unhooked the car battery a couple of hours & it reset itself. I don't know if the fob got unpaired somehow, but got a bunch of errors like brake, VSA, TPM, etc., but went away after driving about 10 miles.
I would contact a Locksmith who can make car keys. Pray they could help, otherwise you might end up visiting the dealer.
Did you get the second key made?
- Nope. We got an eBay fob initially to test if my scanner could program it, but couldn't. Nobody will touch an eBay fob because most locksmiths want you to buy it from them & in this case after shopping around, the dealer was actually a lot cheaper for once, but only if you bought a $65 OEM fob online (dealer only charging $50 to program while locksmiths were charging $200+). Don't know anyone else in Indy with the right equipment willing to program the eBay fob, even for an experiment or giggles unfortunately. 😔 Dealerships want to sell the fob ($82) & key blade ($33) separately so was planning on just cutting the eBay key blade to save. While I do understand the gamble of a cheap Chinese fob, the OEM is made in Mexico. I didn't expect that from Honda.
