Scotty,
1st off I enjoy your informative YouTube videos.. nice to have someone on our side. I bought my daughter a previous damage 2016 Nissan Versa with the dreaded CVT transmission.. but I did get a good price for the car.. my daughter is very hard on cars as she has crashed every one of them thus the previous damage purchase.. I do not have any problems with the car which currently at 70,000 miles.. I wasn’t awRe of Nissans quality until after I bought her the car and later started watching you videos. So I said all that to ask you, how can I ensure the transmission will continue to work.. there are no problems as of yet but would like to do what I need to do to keep the cars transmission working as well as the rest of the car.. I change her engine oil for her around 4000 miles as I do my cars..
thanks in advance and keep up the good fight

With those trans you will need to either measure what comes out amd put back in the same on a spill and fill or you will need to monitor fluid temp and use the full plug on the bottom. And I would highly advise against using any sort of silicone sealant on the pan gasket due to even if any comes off and gets into the cvt the magnet won’t save you. So with that said do the fluid every 30k with Nissan fluid ns-3 and nothing else and just try and be easy on it.. wouldn’t hurt to have the car scanned now because a lot of those cars have cvt warranty extensions so it may still be covered under warranty
Thanks R4nier.. I’m no mechanic but I do try to fix things I think I’m capable of.. this seems a bit complicated and I haven’t changed transmission fluid sense I changed the fluid on my 1970 chevrlle way back in the early 70s.. is this something I should have the Nissan service department do..?
That would be your safest bet to avoid any concerns
Start changing the transmission fluid religiously every 50-60k miles or sooner, and do it now. From how Scotty's described those CVTs, sooner is always better than later. You might even consider an every 30-50k mile fluid change. He always says oil is cheap, engines are expensive with oil changes, that motto's probably a good one to follow for transmission fluid and transmissions as well.
Thanks I’ll look into doing that this weekend.. thanks again
50k-60k on a Nissan CVT is too much.
The longest possible interval on those IMO is 30k miles, but usually id recommend 30k KILOMETERS (20k miles)
Here is the solution to your problem; Either stop buying your daughter cars or teach her how to drive.
How do you think that is being helpful Mr..? You don’t know my situation or my daughters. I asked a guestion that everyone but you gave a reasonable answer.. but I guess there is a jerk in every crowd and today it’s you..!
I would change the CVT transmission fluid every 30,000 miles maximum on those and use the OEM fluid. She also needs to baby the vehicle and not drive it hard (seems that is unlikely to happen). And pray a lot.
Thanks day walker I’ll get to the Nissan dealership this weekend.. she probably hasn’t put 1000 miles on the car in over a year..
Drop the pan. Clean the pan and magnets. Clean or change the screen filter.
If the pan gasket is solid (not soft rubber), you can reuse it with a light coating of silicone gasket sealer.
Then, simply drain and fill the CVT every 30,000 miles or so.
I use Castrol Transmax CVT fluid without any issues.
They will still die early, but fresh fluid is the one thing that will slow the belt from slipping and self-destructing.
Thanks Carlos. I’ve been under her car to change the oil. I’ll take a look at YouTube maybe there is a video on what you mentioned..
This forum is for people who have technical questions about their vehicles. We're not here to listen to you whine about how your daughter can't drive or that you keep buying her cars. If you're having a problem with your position as the Apprentice To The Village Idiot, call Dr. Phil.
Apparently you can’t read besides being a complete jerk.. die
To see a complete jerk, just look in the mirror.
How long did it take you to come up with that one .. jerk
I forgive you, Miles.
I actually owned this same exact car from before, and surprisingly it's not as bad as people claim it is. It's quite reliable and fun to drive. The first time I changed the transmission fluid for the CVT was at the 60,000 miles mark. Then after that I started changing it every 20,000 miles. Your best bet is to change it at Nissan service or an authorized Nissan dealer as changing the CVT oil requires some precision. Unfortunately it will cost you a bit but its nothing drastic. In my country it cost 150$. But i dont know how much it'll be in the U.S. Also the recommended oil for that car is 5W-30 or 10W-30 every 2,500 miles. If I was you I would also advise my daughter not to drive too reckless in that car because it is very light and its not made of strong material, and so god forbid in a case of an accident it isn't that safe!
Best of luck
