[Solved] Should I change my axle gear ratios

Hi,

I own a 2017 Tacoma TRD Sport with 50,500 miles and was thinking of re-gearing the front and rear diffs. Is it recommended, while it hurt the car, and will it help with the sloppy transmission?

Thanks

Joe

Did you put larger tires on it or something?

Sloppy transmission? Can you elaborate on what you mean by that?

No, I don't plan on putting bigger tires, however, I plan on adding metal front and rear bumpers which will add some weight. On the road, it's always hunting for gears, but I bought the car knowing that. I think the gear ration as it is now is 3.91, so I'd like to change them out to 5.29..

Before spending any more time on this, price it out. You may instantly make up your mind.

Is it recommended

no

while it hurt the car

it will affect your speedometer, odometer, transmission shifting, ABS, traction & stability control systems, fuel economy, etc.

It might be possible to reprogram some computer modules to fix this, but it will cost you a small fortune.

depends what you mean by sloppy, but probably not.

So you are going to change your differential gear ratio, so that your transmission will hopefully not hunt gears as much?

Most people I see re-gearing their truck do it because they have put larger tires on it. The larger tires throws things out of whack and drastically reduces the power of the truck, re-gearing matches it up better. Even my swap to winter tires going from 265/65 to 265/70 made a noticeable difference. I lose power because the truck has to work harder due to the larger tires.

Toyota has matched your tire size to the gear ratio of your differential and transmission, and tweaked it for power and fuel efficiency. You will get more "Get up and go!" but at the expense of fuel economy if you change your gearing. As far as the transmission shifting sloppy, not sure what the change of gears will do exactly, but it may even make it worse. Hopefully some pros will chime in on that.

Have you heard of anybody that kept the same tires, and re-geared it with what you want, and seen the results? I would want some proof that it is going to do what I am hoping for, before spending the money and time on it.

The weight of metal bumpers should not affect it that much.

Thanks for the feedback, great advice!!!

Would anyone recommend adding an oil catch can on a 2017 Tacoma TRD Sport with 50500 miles??? I know that the engine comes with direct and port fuel injectors, so would it positively affect the engine???

No, not needed.

Great, Thanks...
