2018 BMW X5 Diesel 92,000 miles

I purchased this vehicle for my daughter and added an BMW warranty which ends soon at 100,000 miles.  My daughter likes the car and thus far there have been very little warranty problems; just suspension which was covered and fixed.  My concern is the vehicle being out of warranty and problems with the emissions.  I have read that the BMW diesel engines have many problems which are very expensive to fix.  Please help.  Thank you!

Well if she really likes this vehicle and has an endless amount of money to spend on, what the heck it's her money. BMWs are known to be very high cost of repair that turn to an endless money pit as they age when it's out of warranty.

I owned a 2007 BMW X5, from 2016-2020.  From 160K miles to 200K miles. And owning one taught me a lot about cars and how different makes engineer their vehicles.

They are amazing vehicles.  And they are relatively reliable. But, and a huge but… they are also expensive to maintain.

Many things may need repair or maintenance like any other car.  It just cost so much more on a BMW.

FWIW, I spent more money on those 4 years of BMW ownership on repairs and maintenance than I did on my 1999 Honda Accord in 21 years.

There will be 3 things you can do:

-don't drive it any more, so you do not reach the 100.000 miles border of warranty-expiration,

-go on with the car, not to loose your daughter's love and affection, and pay the emission repairs when they come, and pray every evening on your knees, your BMW will be an exeption and not having those problems,

-ditch the car in time and have breakfast at a different table...

I would go for the 'pray' method (as miracles will happen).

I am praying (as miracles will happen) {black}

If she likes and wants it, let her pay repair bills from her pocket.

Thank you for all of your feedback. My daughter just started nursing school so I will "help" her out with the vehicle. This car has been trouble free for 92,000 miles with an extended BMW warranty which runs out at 100k. I looked at the new and newish BMW X5 and new and newish Audi Q7. The prices have dramatically gone up since I purchased this vehicle in 2021. Because of that I am considering another warranty (Car Shield/Olive/Endurance) for 4 more years. Unfortunately the warranties do not include emission issues. I am really stuck here. Buying a new car is so costly and because the BMW has 92k there is not much trade in value (20k???) . I am also considering trading and leasing for 3 years but at that point I will have nothing. Option 3 take the risk and pay for the repairs as needed. I am sure you are all thinking I should have purchased a Honda or Toyota. Well I did "help" my grandson with a 2022 Honda Civic Si. That car is a dream.

We can only advise you what to do and what not, and share our experience like @kaizen did. The final decision is yours.

I forgot to mention that she has 3 boys and uses this vehicle to tow a horse trailer so the 7000 lb towing capacity is needed.
