Hello Scotty,
I wanna buy a 2018 Toyota Rav4 or a Honda CR-V. I already saw the great video you did comparing them but still have some questions, specially about the 2018 Honda CR-V and the CVT transmission they come with. Is this CVT transmission in the newer Honda CR-Vs reliable? Has had issues in the last 3 years?
The 2018 Toyota Rav4 is the last one that comes with the 6 speed automatic standard transmission which is a pretty good one, so here I have no questions.
I'd like to hear some opinions to finally take a decision.
Thanks.
Go with the RAV4 since it has the naturally aspirated engine with the 6-speed AT. The engine has both port and direct (DI) engine whereas the Honda is GDI only and turbocharged on top of that. You don’t want to deal with oil dilution or potential for carbon buildup on back of intake valves (over time) and will cost money to clean those - catch can can help mitigate but still not fullproof. The Toyota has none of those shortcomings, and I’d rather take a 6-speed AT over CVT for longevity. In fact when it comes to the CRV my preference is 2014- and earlier CRVs when they offered port-injection engines and conventional automatic transmission. The final nail in coffin is the 2018 RAV4 is final year in that generation so presumably the bugs worked out. While no one can make guarantees, I’d put my money on the RAV4 outlasting the CRV and potentially fewer issues.
thanks for your input, really appreciated
Never mind opinions (plural), … all you need is just one opinion: … 2018 RAV-4. Most reliable RAV-4 to date! ( RAV-4 right after still awaits judgment.)
F.S.
I’d actually go RAV4 on this one, if the CR-V you’re looking at has the 1.5L turbocharged engine.
No matter what you end up choosing, have it thoroughly inspected by a professional mechanic, before purchase.
All the best!
Thanks!
Honda makes a decent cvt. I rather put my faith in the traditional Toyota automatic.
