Can we replace the thin custom tires with thicker tires?
2020 Mazda 3 @ 25,000 miles
By "thicker tires", are you referring the profile/height or the width of the tires.? What size tires are on your Mazda now?
To better understand on how to assist you, why are you looking for thicker tires?
By thicker, I think I mean higher profile. There is only about an inch or two between the ground and the rims. You feel every little bump. The width is fine.
I will assume you mean the tire "width" (first size number ie 285/70R17 versus 275/70R17)
and not sidewall height (285/80R17 versus 285/70R17).
and the answer is, "how much wider"?
Are you keeping the same wheel? A wheel can only safely accommodate a particular tire size range.
It's going to change your ability to steer and accelerate, stop etc.
if you get a wider wheel, then it's going to stick out the side of the vehicle and cause other problems.
So the real question here is, why do you want wider tires on an economy car? It's probably not worth it.
I mean higher profile... You feel every little bump
Yes but you would have to buy smaller wheels in order to keep the same overall tire diameter.
I know what you mean... Low profile tires are very fashionable right now and I hate them.
@mmj - Fashionable to whom, the neighborhood pimple farm?
wheel & tire companies love 'em.
Tires are shredding at unprecedented rates, and wheels are cracking left right and centre!
Your main issue is those massive 18 inch rims in an econobox vehicle..
Maybe try swapping them out for the 205/60R16 spec as found in the sedan version of your vehicle. It should be a direct fit.
However, assuming your vehicle is still under warranty, you may have to discuss your options with your dealer.
As the others have already mentioned, once you start messing about with the tyres, be prepared for changes (usually detrimental) to your vehicle’s handling characteristics. Also premature suspension wear, in some cases.
If you risk voiding your warranty, I’d recommend first switching to Michelin rubber all around.
All the best!
