Gas mileage

Dear Scotty,

Big fan. I recently purchased a 2023 Civic Sport Hatchback 6-speed manual transmission with the 2.0L Naturally Aspirated engine [base model] (based on your recommendation, thanks).

I purchased it because I wanted reliability and good mileage. The stats say I should get 37mpg highway but I have been consistently getting better than that. The last fill-up I had ~420 miles and I averaged 42.9mpg! I always thought that the stats for mpg were the best possible conditions I drive mostly back country roads in Upstate New York (Hemlock to Henrietta for work). I am deliberately driving to get the best mpg possible (aka I’m Not driving it like a race car). How is it that I am getting so much better mpg than called for 🤷🏻‍♂️?

I drove the first 5,000 miles with the ECON Mode ON but for this last tank of gas, I turned it OFF to see if and how much it would affect my mpg and I ended up getting even better than with it ON. I’m unsure of what that ECON function does when you drive a manual transmission because after all, I’m controlling the shifting and the revs. In my research, the only thing I can find is that it helps the AC work more efficiently but it hasn’t been hot enough here yet to require the AC. I’m keeping the ECON Mode off

What are your thoughts?

Thanks,

Robert
