Im living i eastern canada at the moment i've been here for just a little less than a year. Ive been looking for a vehicle pretty much everyday since I arrived and ive never in my life seen vehicles in such bad condition for such a high price (thanks covid) After watching scottys video on the new impreza i've been looking into purchaseing (for the first time) a brand new car something that i thought id never do but my biggest worry is thoses gaskets. are there any other vehicles out there with the sealant gaskets and what sort of miles do they get before giving out? i travel alot so as a result im very froogle with my cash (tight as an arsehole some might say). what are we reaconing the longevity of this vehicle is/could be?

The new Subarus don't have any issues with head gaskets (any more than any other car, that is).

I think the concern is actually this, silicone RTV used in place of gaskets resulting in oil leaks:

Thank you great info

The head gasket problem was resolved 10 years ago. 2012ish and earlier may have the problem. 2012ish and later will most likely not.

From what I have read the problem was fixed in Subaru's newer series OHC engines equipped with timing chains. So the rule of thumb would be a Subaru engine with belt-driven cams is likely to have weak head gaskets. Those with timing chains don't have the problem.

As far as I know the old Subaru pushrod engines with gear-driven cam didn't have head gasket problems either, but those haven't been made in decades so finding one would be highly unlikely. (I had a Subaru with the pushrod boxer in the late 1970s and never had a problem with it.)

That’s a good rule of thumb. GTK.

Thanks great useful tips to know

Welcome new member.  The new Subarus don't have any issues with head gaskets (any more than any other car, that is).  It would be a fine car for Eastern Canada.

Take a look in the search bar above for more info on contemporary Subarus.

FYI: I think the Crosstrek substantially outsells the Impreza, but they are essentially the same car except for a small lift.  If you search "Crosstrek", you'll get more info than if you search "Impreza".
