Scotty, I really want to buy my dream muscle car, a 1992 Camaro IROC Z28 or 1992 RS. It's the third generation of Camaro. Is this a good and reliable car to get or is it crap and should I go for a Foxbody Mustang or Firebird/Trans Am from the same generation?

Clean up your language please.

Well take it easy my guy. No need to blurt expletives.

The IROC-Z's have been rising in popularity and price lately. And this is because......I have no idea. I have to monitor these markets 24/7/365, and for the price these cars are bringing right now you definitely are not getting your moneys worth. I've seen decent mileage examples go for $17k - $20k. I've sold these cars and driven a bunch and to me, that is way too much. They are all hard plastic and not nearly as fast as you may think. I get digging the body....I like the design a lot, particularly the front end. But you can get an already built, absolutely sick Foxbody 'stang for the price of a stock IROC.

If it is your dream car, it is ok to pursue it. But I have seen more than one case with those where it was a case of "never meet your heroes." As with any old car, things break and you're talking about old school GM wiring and tech.

If you decide to buy one, I wouldn't spend much. If you want the best bang for your buck, the Foxbody is where it's at. And as for reliability, they aren't known for that at all.

Thank you very much for this answer my man. I take it your an experienced mechanic. I'm in my 20's, don't have a really good job and want my first muscle car bought with cash. I think I'm going to take your advice and go with a stock Foxbody. They seem to be the most reliable. Yeah, the car is 30 years old, but I might as well go with the more reliable one. Wouldn't that make sense and be smart?

I can always sell the Foxbody later and get another car when I get a better job anyways right?

Also, you are right. The base Camaro RS only has about 140-170hp which is VERY weak. It doesn't even put out 200hp.

The Foxbody LX that Im looking at stock already puts out 225hp. That's insane. The IROC Z/28 puts out 245hp though but if its less reliable then the Mustang and has a higher chance of breaking down what's the point?

Makes sense to me. Yes, I've been in the automotive industry my whole life. I just give out information based on my experiences and my personal thoughts. In your case, I believe the Fox is the right choice. They've pretty much depreciated as much as they are going to, parts are everywhere and dirt cheap, and they can actually be reliable if you take care of them.

Thanks. A very valuable piece of free information. I'm going to take your advice and go with a Foxbody given my circumstances.

It looks like Scotty himself vets who he lets people moderate so I trust you are giving me good and accurate information. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-MlqntHB50

Well he does choose his moderators. However, I am not in that group at this time. I'm just here to share my experience and help as many members as I can, much like Scotty himself. There's a lot of reading material on the internet to compare these vehicles if you'd like to see what other owners and enthusiasts have to say. I buy and sell performance and exotic cars and build custom cars for a living, so I have a lot of knowledge on these kinds of vehicles. The moderators and other forum members are kind enough to bring these questions to my attention so that I can share my advice and opinion on the topic. There are many very knowledgeable members here in addition to the team of excellent moderators. 🙂

Wow. I didn't know a word as harmless as that would cause such an uproar. I thought we were all men who could handle a little bad language. But I digress, I don't usually say this but since I have a lot of respect for Scotty I'm sorry.

Anyways, I would really like to hear Scotty's opinion on my question. Is there anyway to contact him? I think I might just go with the Foxbody. They are only rising in value and I don't have a very good job at the moment. When I want to sell it and get something different I'll be able to because the value of the car is so high. At this point I want a reliable muscle car because I'm young and in my 20's with not much cash.

Thanks for the advice.
