Hey Scotty,

Im a TN native who lives and grew up just outside of Clarksville. Hope you’re enjoying our state and what’s essentially my home town!

My question is about a 1987 Pontiac Trans Am that I bought as a project car back in highschool. I had trouble with overheating for months and couldn’t seem to figure it out. So I ended up dropping a rebuilt 350 in it that was bored over to a 383 Stroker and my over heating problem improved, but I was never able to solve it completely. Added a toggle switch to the radiator fan eventually and that keeps it from over heating for the most part. But during the hot summer months I still have problems with it, and it still runs hot normally. It’s next to impossible to do any “city” driving because it runs hot at lights and I’m so anxious it’s going to overheat I don’t even care to bother.

This was several years ago at this point. It’s been sitting for quite some time now and I haven’t had the time nor money to fool with it lately. Had a baby recently and whatnot, so yeah. Haha. I was just wondering if you had any thoughts on what the problem could be or any recommendations on what I could try. People try to buy it off me regularly and I won’t sell it cause it’s special to me in some way. But the longer I just leave it sitting there, the more I wonder if I should just let it go...

Thanks,

Chase

If you have never replaced the radiator that could be your issue. That or the heater core. Sounds like you have a blockage in one of them. Heater core you can bypass and test. Don’t plug the lines from the motor just connect them together from the heater core or install a short hose from point a to b on the motor. If that isn’t it get you a cheap laser temperature reader from home depot or lowes, usually 20-25 bucks. See if the temp is the same across the radiator. If you have hot/cold spots then you have a blockage. Sometimes taking it off the car and letting CLR soak in it can help. Flush it good before putting it back in if you try that.
