I drive a 1997 toyota camry LE, 4 cyl 2.2L engine with about 121,000 miles. It only had one previous owner, who was the mother of a family friend, and was taken good care of before I got it. No accidents other than she backed the car up into the garage door with her driver door open and had to have it replaced, but other than that no other damage was done. She ended up with dementia and was unable to drive it, so it sat in a garage for a couple years before my Grandma bought it. Her and my Grandfather did minor repairs and got it running good, and gave it to me to take over at approximately 100,000 miles. I have been driving it since for about a year, and the only repairs, other than regular maintenance is I had to replace the emissions valve, so nothing totally out of the ordinary for an older toyota.
No other troubles have come up except for a couple months into driving it, when I would drive at night with my lights on, and use the turn signals, my driving lights would shut off (light switch is connected to the turn signal switch). I would have to jiggle the switch to get them to come back on, sometimes for a couple seconds. If I had my brights on and used my turn signals, nothing happens, but when I turn my brights off, my driving lights would also go out. Its been getting persistently worse, but I had no time to figure out what was wrong until now. I am not sure where down the line the problem is between the switch and the lights themselves, but because I can get them to come back on if I jiggle the switch a bit, Im guessing its probably the switch or the wiring directly connected to the switch, but I thought Id get some input before I start tearing it apart to fix it. I also wanted to know if it is something a novice could do, or if I should take it to someone so I don't make the problem worse.
I am sorry if this question has been answered before. I tried looking it up but nothing sounded quite right. Thank you so much for your guys help! This is a great community and I am so happy people are so nice and respectful to each other.
It's most likely the 26-year-old combo switch gone hinky.
Okay thank you so much! Ill try replacing it and see if it fixes the problem.
Yep that was the part that was out. Thank you!
Glad it worked out, thanks for letting us know!
