Scotty, my mom has a 2010 Nissan Altima with over 100k miles. She had her A/C serviced just before the pandemic hit and the compressor will not cycle and I can’t adjust the temperature because it freezes up and very little air will come out until the A/C is turned off. The mechanic told her to come by and her would fix it but the shop ended up closing.
He told her it was an easy fix but she could not remember what needed to be done. Is this truly a simple fix or do I need to go to a repair shop.
thank you!
Well, if it keeps freezing up it usually means it has a bad temperature sensor inside the evaporator. And it's one giant job taking the dash apart to get to that sensor if that's the problem
I'm the original owner of a 2017 Nissan Rogue Sport. At the end of last summer, my car exhibited the same symptoms as your Mom's car. Each time I turned it on, the AC would work fine for a while, and it would seem to freeze up and hardly any air would come out of the dash vents. My car had about 77,000 miles on it at that point. I had the evaporator sensor replaced with a new one from Nissan. This did not fix the problem. It continued behaving the same way.
Concerned that this was going to be an expensive repair, I put off fixing it since the summer was over and I would not need the AC until the following summer. Once the summer started this year, the AC behaved in the same fashion. Each time that I turned it on, it would work initially and then seem to freeze up and hardly any air would come out of the vents.
My AC system had never been serviced. My repair shop removed all of the original AC refrigerant and replaced with new refrigerant. They also replaced the cabin air filter just to make sure that there was adequate air flow. The AC is now working great. It was a very inexpensive fix.
I hope that your repair turns out to be as simple and inexpensive as mine.
