I have a 03 F-150 with almost 150,000 miles on it.The truck has spent its life on Long Island and every other part of the truck has been half destroyed by salt. The other day the ABS light came on and now stays on. I tried my $34 walmart scan tool but it found no codes. I then did a quick check of the brake system, good fluid level and pressure when you step on the brake. On an open road slammed the brake pedal to the floor with the truck at 40 mph to see if the system was working. Results were little skidding from 1 or 2 tires not sure which ones but the truck stayed straight and stopped in a reasonable distance. I'm thinking one of my wheel speed sensors took a dump. Any suggestions? I also found a line that goes from the distribution block on the rear axle up to nothing. No fluid comes out when the brakes are used. Appears to be a vent or something.
Go to a mechanic or autozone with better tools to scan the ABS module.
You'll need a dealer-level scan tool to get to the ABS fault codes. Failure is most commonly caused by a bad sensor, usually the cable due to flexing, but there can be other causes of course. I've been ignoring my ABS light for years since the brakes work normally otherwise and not checked at state inspection.
Unfortunately your code reader won’t get into the module responsible for this issue.
