Hello fellow car enthousiasts,

I am looking to buy a cheap reliable second hand automatic car and I am located in italy.

I came across a toyota corolla  station wagon from 2005 with 279,000 km (173,363 miles).

It is listed for 700 euro (843,43 USD).

This is the link: https://www.subito.it/auto/toyota-corolla-2004-2009-2005-siena-371392623.htm

Could you please give me any advice on whether this is a go or a "don't even think about buying the thing just run away from it case"?

This is a tough question for me to answer, because the Corolla from Italy is slightly different from the Corolla in America. I’ll try to give as much info as I can.

The difference is with the engine and the transmission. These are the two most crucial components of the car.

The Italian Corolla uses a Diesel engine. The American Corolla uses a Petrol engine. Assuming Toyota quality is consistent, IMHO, Diesel’s are usually better for longevity. So the Italian Corolla has that going for it.

On the other hand the Italian Corolla uses a MMT transmission. I’m not sure what it exactly stands for multi mode transmission or multi mode manual transmission.

It’s a fascinating transmission and I would love to try one. While driving it, it might drive like an automatic, behind the scenes it is a manual transmission that uses a clutch.

To my knowledge, we don’t have these transmissions in America, only traditional Automatics and traditional Manuals. As such I can’t really say if the MMT is a good or bad transmission.

If this were the American Corolla of the same year, and assuming everything checks out, I would take the risk.  Corolla’s have a long life in America in terms of years and mileage.

I recommend having a mechanic locally check it out, if that is possible.

With that Italian Corolla, assuming everything checks out, it may be worth the risk as well. I recommend doing research if the MMT in the Corolla is a reliable transmission.  My quick research found one bad story, but many good stories.

With the age and the mileage of that Corolla, my only concern would be that the clutch might need replacing, as they eventually wear out.

Good Luck!

Thanks for your reply.
I will definitely let a mechanic check it out before I buy it.

The Corolla 1.4 Diesel is an excellent engine (they have it in Turkey thats how I know)
The transmission is great as long as its not the robotic multimode transmission in which case it is horrible
