[Solved] Am i getting ripped off?? '05 Camry suspension.

Hey Scotty,

Thanks for being on youtube and helping car newbies like me!

I bought a 2005, 2.4 litre camry, with 139K miles, single owner for $1450 (canadian). But the front suspension is busted up and makes a "thud" noise when going over pot holes.

I'm getting quoted $800 - $ 900 to replace the front suspension. is it worth it??

The seller was apparently driving it around with this problem for a while. Should I be worried about any other subsequent issues to other parts of the car due to this?

Any help will be well appreciated!

Thank you for the toyota history videos!

I would fix it since that car should have a lot of life left.

Sounds like worn out bushings.  Cold weather does that.

I would ask him to itemize what parts he is replacing. A total front end rebuild would be more than $800. Sounds to me like it could be a ball joint or the strut upper bushing.

There are some front bushings that wear out.

also an engine mount on top that can cause the noise.
all easily fixable that you can do ...

search YouTube for where to start .....

a mechanic might do everything including shocks / struts ....

go on rock auto for part pricing... look for hearts ♥️ for popular buys

Well, wear could be a problem, but in my experience, potholes, curbs and the like are the usual source of major clunks. I second the idea of getting a detailed quote - then you can take that quote to another mechanic or 2.

Hi Folks,

Thank you for the advice. Turns out it was the bushings that are worn out.

I also went to 2 different mechanics, first was Canadian Tire (chain) and Then a regular mechanic. Canadian Tire quoted $900 and the other guy said it would be $450.

Should i be worried about putting sub par parts in? because i'm guessing the cheaper option means cheaper part. But My car is 15year old and cost only $1450 so finding it hard pressed to spend premium $$ on it. what do u recommend?

Another Interesting or rather sad discovery is that my Rack and Pinion at the front is leaking. which i was told is a serious issue. the steering is not that stiff or unresponsive, so the regular mechanic suggested i wait till it gets worse. Is that advisable? also is ok to go with 3rd party replacement parts?

For the power steering leak, Lucas Oil sells a power steering leak sealer. I used it for 5 years/50K mi on a 96 Camry. Had to add a little fluid and more leak sealer once or twice a year.
