Hi Scotty
I wonder if you could do an educative video on the use of a handbrake, I understand that in the US you guys refer to it as an emergency brake. In New Zealand we are taught to pull the handbrake when parking the car and for hill starts regardless if the car is manual or automatic, it's required to pass the drivers license test.
I noticed in American movies that in a scene where they park a car, the car shifts slightly forward and back after parking which is due to putting the car in Park and taking the foot off the brakes without pulling up the handbrake. This appears to be the norm for a majority of Americans as I've read this quora answer
https://www.quora.com/Why-don%E2%80%99t-Americans-like-parking-brakes
that explains why most American believe its only for use in emergencies with brake failure due to it being referred to as an "emergency brake".
I also saw a tiktok video where an American asks why NZ'ers always pull up the handbrake when parking
People like to throw around the saying "Americans are dumb" but I hate that saying for anyone. There's a reason for everything and if we can find the solution we should educate rather than shaming people. In this case I believe its the handbrake being referred to as an Emergency Brake in America and that it may not be taught to pull it after parking. Also the knowledge that the reason is to keep stress off the gearbox and also to really prevent it from moving.
Anyway I think it would be a great video for those ones you put up as "if you don't do this, you're stupid"
Thank you Scotty, I didn't have anyone teaching me about cars growing up, my girlfriend refers to you as my Youtube dad as your voice is very distinctive when I watch your videos.
I drive a 2007 Nissan March 12SR which is a Japanese import K12 Micra manual transmission 1.2L engine thats tuned by Autech making 108HP from factory. Would love you to drive it if you're ever in New Zealand
Hello from New Zealand,
Juderson
(pronouced, Jude-er-sin, apparently a Scottish last name my dad found in the book of names looking for the closest sounding name to my Chinese name)
I use mine religiously, but to be honest an automatic in park SHOULD be fine. There have been a lot of recalls for cars not actually shifting into park, as we know, so I use the brake as a precaution.
On manuals I use it 100% of the time as well as it is just habit. It doesn't hurt anything and is a little extra insurance against a roll away vehicle. I also move my manuals into gear and never leave them in neutral when parking.
I use it all the time when parking. Manual. Automatic. Just habit.
I live in Canada, and I call it a parking brake, because that's what my manual calls it. I only use it when parking on a steep incline (automatic). It is absolutely unnecessary for hill starts. I never roll backwards. I notice a lot of people use it all the time, and I think it gets overused unnecessarily. I also notice many manual drivers don't put their transmission in gear when parking like they're supposed to. I don't know anybody who has had a parking brake related incident. I find parking brakes to be very unreliable, compared to the transmission parking pawl.
